Blurb:

If the best man and maid of honor are both single, it’s practically an unwritten rule that they should pork.

…so begins a rocky acquaintance between Jean-Christian “J.C.” Rousseau and Libitz Feingold at the wedding of J.C.’s brother and Lib’s best friend. While manslut best man J.C. is surprised when maid of honor Libitz soundly spurns his advances, his curiosity is piqued. The girl he couldn’t have becomes the only one he wants.

So, when he finds a seventy-year-old portrait in the attic of his sister’s mansion that bears an uncanny resemblance to the prickly gallery owner, he enlists her help in solving a mystery seven decades in the making. Young passionate couple making love in bed

EXCERPT

“You must be the famous Libitz,” he’d opened, taking his assigned seat beside her, and flashing his sexiest grin.

After all, if she was his chosen conquest for the weekend, there was no time like the present to work his wiles. Wearing a simple black sheath dress with aqua circles, 70s-style mod make-up and oversized silver and crystal chandelier earrings that almost brushed her thin shoulders, she’d turned to him and blinked those wide, all-seeing eyes.

“And you…must be kidding.”

Taken aback, he’d stared at her for a second before chuckling. “Wha—I mean, how’s that?”

“Let’s start over,” she said, cocking her head to the side. “Here’s your line, Romeo: “Hi, I’m Étienne’s brother, Jean-Christian. It’s nice to meet you.” Want to give it a try?”

He cleared his throat, his smile fading. “Hi, I’m Étienne’s brother, Jean-Christian. It’s nice to meet you.”

She locked eyes with his, her lips neutral, neither tilted up nor down. “Hi. I’m Libitz Feingold, Kate’s best friend…and it’s not cold enough.”

“What?” asked J.C., feeling completely turned around.

“It’s not cold enough in hell for me to fall for someone like you,” she said, then shifted back around to talk to the person on her other side.

Well, fuck me, thought J.C., taking another gulp of beer as he tried to figure out if he was insulted or impressed. After a moment, he nudged her in the side with his elbow and she looked at him over her shoulder, her expression annoyed.

“Yes?”

“I hear the temperature’s dropping there,” he said casually, then added, “because they’re expecting a visit from you.”

“Ha!” she chortled, a genuine grin brightening her eyes for a moment before she quickly reigned it back in to practiced ennui. “Is that right?”

He shrugged, tipping his bottle of beer back as he held her eyes, challenging her to come back at him with something clever. “So I heard.”

“From all the friends you’ve got there?”

He almost spit his beer out. Damn, but she was quick.

“Truce?’ he asked, placing his beer on the table and holding out his hand.

She stared at his hand for a moment, then looked away, leaning forward to pick up her champagne glass and bringing it slowly to her lips. “No, thanks. Mama didn’t raise no fool.”

“You’re unreal.” She shook her head, that bored look still in place.

“Nope. I’m real. I’m just not a good target for charming scamps looking for trouble.”

“A target? Shit. Who got to you?” he asked, feeling a little abused by her insta-judgement of him without actually getting a chance to know him in person. Not that she was wrong exactly. But getting into trouble with the right person could be a hell of a lot of fun.

“The list is long and distinguished,” she shot back.

His eyes widened and his lips wobbled.

“Oh, God,” she said, shaking her head as her cheeks bloomed an appealing pink under her make-up. “I walked right into that one didn’t I?”

“Yes, you did,” said J.C. with what he hoped was a disarming grin. “All together, now…”

“So’s my Johnson,” they said at the same time, quoting the rebuttal line from Top Gun.

“Hey, look at that,” he said, still smiling at her. “You do know how to have fun. I was beginning to worry.”

Her smile instantly faded. “You’re not as cute as you think you are.”

“Yeah,” he said, nodding as he finished the last of his beer. “I am.”

MY REVIEW

The moment I read the summary of J.C. and the Bijoux Jolis, I knew it was going to be different. A good kind of different. I was not mistaken.

This book is my favorite among all the Rousseau books. Why? Because it is mixed with Historical Fiction and a bit of mystery. This made it more interesting and as I said, different. J.C. and the Bijoux Jolis was romantic… classic and it was elegantly delivered. The writing was smooth and beautiful just like Katy’s other books. I think I can already recognize her books even if she don’t put her name on them.

I instantly loved her characters and since I enjoy witty banters, this book did not disappoint. J.C. is a character to be loved. He stole my heart from the beginning. The manwhore who avoided love as much as he can but ended up helplessly falling in love with this small but beautiful woman Lib— who share the same passion but belongs to a different religion and culture and also engaged to another man. Lib is a strong woman and she is feisty and stubborn and smart and confident and independent yet soft on the inside. She makes a perfect match for J.C. whose character is as strong as her. They make a perfect couple and they are my most favorite in the Blueberry Lane series yet.

I don’t exactly look for it, but there are certain words that usually hit me whenever I read a book. It still surprise me everytime because I find it rare and special and when they do hit a spot, the book suddenly feels like home…

“But forever exists. I promise you it does… It’s a choice. It’s a choice to love someone and be faithful to them and do the work. We’re all capable of that.”

“There was a freshness, a newness, an excitement in finding the right person after knowing so many who weren’t.”

These words are true and I believe them with all my heart.  And for a book to be beautiful and unforgettable, it has to have meaning too. For it to have meaning, it should be able to speak to us–probably in many different ways–but it should speak to us and make us remember their words even before you finished the book. For me, that makes this book not only beautiful and romantic but also hopeful and courageous and brave. Because loving isn’t easy and this book gives hope to those who are afraid to love and be loved in return. Then there’s the magic of destiny and also the truth that we can make them happen.

I loved J.C. and Lib. I loved their story that made them oh so right for each other. Katy has written yet another beautiful love story that will make you feel sexy and will definitely make you swoon!

Marry Me Mad (The Rousseaus #2) by Katy Regnery

Released: October 21, 2016

Blurb:

Did you fall in love with The English Brothers? Were you hot for the Winslows? Katy Regnery’s New York Times bestselling Blueberry Lane series continues with The Rousseau siblings in 2016!

For as long as Madeleine “Mad” Rousseau can remember, she’s been the “sweet” twin to her sister Jax’s “sassy.” But after an especially painful break-up, Mad decides she’s had enough of being sweet. Children’s librarian during the day, she begins visiting Philly’s seedier nightspots on a quest for adventure. When Cortlandt “Cort” Ambler, the ex-boyfriend of Mad’s sister, Jax, saves her from disaster on one such evening, an unlikely friendship is born between the rebellious librarian and the moonlighting pianist…and two broken hearts begin a journey toward being whole again.

I loved Jonquils for Jax. I really liked Marry Me Mad!

Both books are part of The Rousseau Series but both can be read as standalone. These two books are beautiful in different kind of way that readers will surely enjoy. While Jonquils for Jax is enchantingly sweet, Marry Me Mad is delictably hot. Forget the sweetness of Jonquils for Jax for a while because this book is more spice than sweetness and Katy delivered them well. And oh my gosh. CORT. The banters between him and Mad brought a lot of smiles on my face. I was surprised most of the times because I kinda found myself smiling more times than I can count. And if you want a sexy read with humor and wit, you won’t be disappointed. My favorite is the harp scene. You got to read the book to find out. It’s one of the hottest scene I’ve ever read in a romance books. Katy leveled up the hotness and I bet most of the readers will love it!

In Marry Me Mad, I instantly fell in love with Cort. Knowing he’s an Ambler who are known to be the blacksheep of the Blueberry Lane, added more allure to the personality of this thoughtful, beautiful, and talented soul. Here is a tattooed man who plays piano and harp and has the kindest and the softest of hearts.

Madeleine Rousseau or Mad for short, is Jax’s twin sister. If you already read Jonquils for Jax, then you know that Jax is the sassy one, the socialite twin, the popular award winning producer in Hollywood and the opposite of Mad. Mad is a librarian, the gentle, sweet and pristine Rousseau sister. But underneath her proper clothes and elegant pearls is a wild woman waiting to be unleashed.

I had a glimpse of Mad and Cort in Jonquils for Jax but I didn’t see the real Mad until this book. I know she was the sweet sister… the one who always there for you when you need someone to talk to. She’s the listener who lives in the shadow of Jax, but deep inside she has sass and spice which made Cort love her more.

I think that one of the highlights for me while reading this book is when I realized that many of us can actually relate to Mad. There is always something inside of us, no matter what our exteriors show to everyone else, that is hidden and waiting to be free. I kinda envy Mad for having Cort–passionate and loving and who knows the real her, appreciate her and embrace her wholly. I fall for Cort as well, more and more throughout the story.

Marry Me Mad is like a second chance kind of book for me since Cort and Mad have loved each other since they were little but never had their chance until they meet after ten years or so. It is a story about two soulmates who are destined to love each other, but they needed time to grow separately and learn how to fight for true love and their happiness. It shows that some childhood feelings that is kept hidden through the years, when watered, sometimes makes the best kind of love. It can be a beautiful fairytale. Mad and Cort have that kind of fairytale.

Though I still love Jonquils for Jax better than Marry Me Mad, this book is all love. For a girl who is a sucker for Happily-Ever-After, Katy Regnery’s books is always a go to. I think this is her forte. She always give beautiful endings. It’s like a sweet escape from all the ugliness in life and it makes you believe that fairytales can still do happen.

Will I recommend this book? YES. Will I still read the next story? So freaking YES. Now, I am looking forward to J.C.’s story!

Excerpt:

She stood on the sidewalk facing him, a sweet smile on her lips.

Cort gestured to his front door with a flick of his chin. “Want to come in?”

“Yes. But we have to talk first.”

“What happened to ‘Take me to bed’?”

She sighed. “Fresh air cleared my head.”

He glanced down at his swollen cock, all but bursting against the zipper of his jeans. “I’m dying a little here, baby.”

Her eyes followed his, dancing with mirth when she looked back up at him. “So I see.”

“I’m not alone either,” he said, dropping his eyes to her nipples, which strained against her thin, billowy blouse.

“No,” she said, her voice slightly lower, her smile giving way to a hotter, more needy look. “You’re not.”

“So let’s talk inside.”

She shook her head no. “Here.”

Cort sighed, hitching her flowered bag a little higher on his shoulder, waiting for her to continue.

“No talking about Jax or Thatcher,” she said. “If you talk about Jax, I won’t be able to stay. I’ll feel too guilty. And if you talk about Thatcher, I’ll feel too angry. Promise?”

“I promise.”

She took a step closer to him. “And this one’s big…No falling in love with each other. We’re just about impossible, you and me, so we can’t—you know—bring that sort of emotion into this. We can enjoy each other, but that’s all, Cort. Promise.”

He flinched as she finished. He could feel the involuntary muscle reaction that narrowed his eyes and told him that it was too late. It was a lifetime too late to tell him not to love her, because he’d loved her for most of his life. Her gentleness, her quiet grace, the peace he’d always found in her presence now combined with the scorching chemistry between them that couldn’t be denied. Over and over again throughout his life, he’d looked for her, tried to find someone like her, but his heart had fixed on hers so long ago, it was all but impossible for him not to love her. The only way he could promise her was to promise not to “fall” this weekend, only because he’d already fallen years before.

“I promise not to fall.”

She smiled at him, though the smile had lost a bit of the lightheartedness it had held minutes earlier. “Do you need any promises from me?”

He nodded, closing the distance between them. “Yeah, I do.”

Her eyes widened, flaring with heat, the black of her pupils obliterating the green of her irises as she pressed her breasts against his chest.

“Promise to leave nothing on the table, Mad. Give me everything you’ve got for twenty-four hours.”

“Except…” Her voice broke. “Except my love. I promise.”

His heart clenched at her omission, and it made him want to push her out of her comfort zone a little. “Promise to touch me everywhere with your hot little mouth.”

“I promise,” she murmured, her throat moving as she swallowed.

His eyes narrowed. “Promise to open your legs so I can slide inside of you as if I’ve been doing it all my life.”

“Cort,” she whimpered, her eyes fluttering closed as she looked down at where her chest heaved into his. “I need you.”

My Never-Ending Book Notes (6): The Vixen and The Vet by Katy Regnery

neverennding booknotesMy Never-Ending Book Notes is a Thursday feature about my favorite quotes/notes from the books that I’ve read or currently reading.

Today, my pick is another Katy Regnery’s book. I love Katy so you’re going to get a lot of Katy’s books to be featured here. If you haven’t tried any of her books, you must!

She was like a miracle. The beautiful maiden who showed up at the beast’s castle, only to find there was more man to the monster than she ever could have guessed. Too bad I don’t have an enchanted rose that will change me back into a prince once we kiss. Too bad I will always look like this.

“It feels terrible to want,” he said softly, “when your chances of getting what you want are so slim.”

In this modern-retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by an unreliable source, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.

After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher’s hand and disfigured half of his face, he’s lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy…that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress with a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn’t felt in years.

Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other’s hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they’ll have to decide if the love they found in one another’s arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

Review: After We Break by Katy Regnery

The moment I stepped into the world that Katy Regnery created, I was instantly transported to the beauty and warmth of it. I always find her stories tender and heartwarming.

After We Break is a romantic story about Violet and Zach. Violet was a free-spirited girl who loves poetry and made Zach felt alive. Zach was an awkward, quiet guy who brought out the best in her. His music inspired her to write beautiful poetry and her poems inspired Zach to be the best in his music. But in one warm perfect day, something happened and everything changed. They lost each other for 9 years since that day, until fate brought them together again at Deep Haven.

I loved Z. I loved the little boy who hadn’t known love. I loved the awkward teenager who  was told he was loved but didn’t know what to do about it. Most especially I loved the man who will do everything to love and be loved again in return. And while Violet found it too difficult to say the words he long to hear, it seemed to be easy for Zach to show his feelings for her (I wanted to smack her head a couple of times by the way!).

I didn’t know how to express my feelings about this book in the exact way it made me feel. I searched the right word for the word “kilig” (it’s a Filipino word used to describe a feeling of romantic excitement). I googled but there is no english word that equally give the same weight or meaning. So I’m going to use this word for the first time in years being a book reviewer. For those non-Filipino readers who are not familiar with the word, I even copy here the meaning of “kilig” taken from the article I read that also corresponds to what Oxford Dictionary says:

Kilig, when used as an adjective, refers to what a person feels when exhilarated by an exciting or romantic experience; thrilled, elated, gratified. When used as a noun, kilig means exhilaration or elation caused by an exciting or romantic experience; an instance of this, a thrill.

This book. This book made me kilig, but not the kind that made me shout or giggle loudly. It was the kind that  tugs at your heart, something that you can feel up to the bones and make you happy while at the same time you feel a dull ache in your heart. The kilig kind that makes you secretly smile because you know and feel something that only you can understand.

I was surprised to see that this book has gotten reviews that is less than what it truly deserve. After We Break is a beautiful story and the words flow smoothly and effortlessly. This book is definitely one of Katy’s bests.

This is a story of heartbreak, mistakes, regrets, and how love can make it right again. Most of all it’s a story of unexpected friendship that turned into something more and real but somehow needs to be tested by years of separation and longing. I watched how these two people love each other but somehow find it so desperately hard to be together. I listened to the song “Morning Has Broken” over and over again while reading this book, replaying the scenes in my head. Until now, I still feel the ache in my chest whenever I hear the song. The story still tugs at my heartstrings. I loved Vile and Z and their love story. It can make you believe in second chances and in the reality that sometimes you just can’t un-love a person. Sometimes there is no such thing as “I will love you until I don’t anymore,” because sometimes you just can’t really stop.

Summary:

She was the girl.

The only girl.

The only girl I ever wanted.

The only girl I ever loved.

The only girl I could ever love.

And I killed it.

I destroyed it.

I threw her love away.

For nine years, I’ve kept the memory of her locked in the deepest corner of my heart…all the while hating myself for what I did to her.

To us.

Now, without warning, she’s walked back into my life.

I’m covered in tats.

She’s covered in Polo.

I write heavy metal songs.

She writes chick-lit.

My eyes are angry.

Her eyes are sad.

I still long for her with every fiber of my being.

But I have no idea if she feels the same.

I guess it’s time to find out.
